3 Common Plumbing Issues & How To Avoid Them

Sink Repair

Sometimes, when you run into a plumbing problem, you might be able to resolve it yourself in a DIY fashion. For example, if a drainpipe is blocked, you could have a go at unblocking it with a plunger.

However, some plumbing issues can be so challenging that attempts you make to rectify them yourself could be ineffective or even dangerous. The good news is that getting in touch with a professional local plumber could suffice to help you make a breakthrough in this situation.

Here are three examples of common problems our plumbing maintenance specialists would be able to help people in New Zealand’s Auckland Region overcome.

No Hot Water

If you have cold water coming out of the hot taps this could indicate a few different things.

Electric Hot Water Cylinder:

  • An old ripple relay

  • A blown element

  • A faulty thermostat

LPG:

You could have either run out of LPG or there is no longer any power running to the unit.

If this comes after a power cut, you may need to reset an instantaneous hot water system by switching the power off and on again. The instantaneous gas hot water system should then go through a reset programme and be ready to use again in a few minutes.

If either of these doesn't work, you will need to call in the experts at Matthews Plumbing and Gasfitting Limited and we will send out a technician to help get your hot water back on ASAP.

Clogged Drains

Of course, a lot can travel through your property’s drains — but, ideally, that ‘a lot’ should be largely limited to liquid.

Unfortunately, many other items can make their way into a drain and contribute to the eventual emergence of a blockage there. Oil or grease can accumulate in the pipes, or they could be infiltrated by roots.

A plunger can be used to help unblock drains. Please be careful if you use Drain cleaners as they are very toxic - have a look at the back of the product you will notice the warning labels.  These toxic chemicals can be very bad for your pipes, causing them to deteriorate from the inside out.  If this happens your drains will need to be replaced.

If you have a clogged drain, please call us at Matthews Plumbing and Gasfitting Limited.

Blocked Toilet

Perhaps you’ve hit the toilet’s flush button but the toilet has failed to finish the flushing job, instead leaving a high level of water sitting stationary in the bowl.

If this does happen, you might be willing to pull on some protective clothing and gloves before reaching into the water in the hope of removing the blockage. However, rest assured that plumbers already know what needs to be done for a toilet to be unblocked as efficiently as possible.
